Did you know that the Rijsttafel is a colonial invention? It emerged through the interactions between Dutch colonizers and the diverse culinary traditions found in the Indonesian archipelago. It was once utilized as a symbol of colonial power and prestige and was introduced to the Netherlands by the Indo-European community, also known as the Indische community. If you have been residing in the Netherlands, it is likely that you have predominantly been exposed to Indische cuisine, which combines European and Indonesian influences. I would like to extend an invitation to explore Indonesian cuisine and its diverse flavors.

In this workshop, participants will embark on a flavorful journey guided by Kimberly Kwanten, where they will learn to prepare a variety of central Javanese dishes. This exciting workshop will cover the preparation of different dishes, including aromatic rice, kering tempeh, and opor ayam/opor jamur. Whether you are a food enthusiast or a history buff, join us on this flavor exploration journey to discover the hidden flavors and intricacies of Indonesian cuisine and the legacies of Dutch colonialism.
